At the age of 13 or thereabouts, Nicky co-wrote a rap about Newcastle United and hasn’t looked back since. Over the years she has wielded various things in various bands including Bonsai Kittens (bass, vocals, sequencer and badly synchronised dance moves), Penny and the Sausages (keyboards and Rubix Cube earrings) and, most recently, The Pop-Up People, whose merrily madcap live outings have featured themes such as “Coronation Street vs Star Trek” and the occasional crisp-throwing riot.

In 2013, the invitation to act as a guest mentor on a songwriting residential for Leeds Beckett University students reignited her musical mojo and also inspired her to co-found Tower of Song, a monthly open mic night for songwriters which sets the challenge of writing songs on a different theme and genre each month and provides a fun, inclusive and encouraging atmosphere in which to perform them.
